I have this suspicion that there's enough variation in how the various
APM BIOSes behave that there are problems still lurking ... like, I sure
got flooded with excess log messages before beta8, but some folk didn't
have such symptoms.

If you let the battery power run all the way down, do you get the
low battery warnings from the BIOS?

Is this Beta6 or so?  Right now (Beta 8) it says what sort of
power source it's using (AC, Battery, Backup) and the power
status messages should be emitted as usual.  But I don't see
a string "AC on-line" there.

I suggest you get the latest version and try that out.  It doesn't
summarize the "high/low/critical/charging" status the BIOS exposes
(is that even with "dumb" batteries?), but in terms of diagnosing
problems it's a lot easier to work from the current sources!
