No, it's not such a bad plan.  I don't *need* anything that apmd does,
but it does have some capabilities that I'd *like* to use.  I can live
without them, but it's a shame...

Like someone mentioned earlier, it sounds like what we really need is a
test suite, that exercises the various things that apmd does or might do
in isolation, to make it easier to figure out which parts are confusing
things on particular machines.  I mean, maybe there's some feature or
behavior of apmd that I could turn off that would make everything work
fine on this machine.
