more weirdness

Thinkpad 770ED, with a docking station (SelectaBase 3); RH 5.2 / 2.0.36.
When apmd is not running, and I am docked and close the lid, the machine
does not suspend (this is normal behavior when the dock is involved with
this machine.)

When apmd is running, and I'm docked and close the lid, the machine goes
catatonic for 30 seconds, then I get the "unhappy beep" sound.  After 30
seconds, the machine is ok again.  xload shows that the load had spiked
up to 5 for an instant, and this appears in syslog:

Grepping syslog for apmd lines since my last reboot reveals this.
The "unknown"edness of some of these is pretty mysterious, and that
"event queue overflowed" message can't be good news, I'm guessing.
