Okay, my laptop (a two-year-old AST Ascentia) does that, but it does it
automatically after you've been suspended for a certain amount of time
(configurable in the BIOS).  This works in Linux as well as Windows.

I don't think the APM BIOS specification specifically talks about hibernate
mode, though I could be wrong.  Anyway, Linux doesn't know a way to directly
tell the system to hibernate.  If you can't make your laptop do it by
itself, it's not currently supported.  (But if you can find documentation on
how to do it, one of the kernel hackers on this list might want to help you
get it implemented...)
