I forgot to mention that my box is an IBM Thinkpad 360CE (very old
vintage, but I got it for a song!).

Reading the APM spec tells me that error code 53h is not defined at
all.  Where could I find out what the fsck this code is for?

Are any of the APM kernel hackers willing to add a case to ignore this 
error code?
