spinning down faster when on battery

I'd really like to tweak the hard drive spindown so that when I'm on
battery, it spins down much quicker; but when I'm plugged into the
wall, quick spin down is only shortening my hard drive life!

I saw bdflush was mentioned before.  Is this the recommended way to
deal with this?  Does it understand apm and whether the battery is
charging or not?
