The apm-list could be an important source of user info, while apmd-list is more user oriented. My question to apm-list would have been/is the following: what is the impact of the ACPI standard on linux? I signed up for a month or so to the ACPI (power-list) email list. This list identifies itself as follows: > > Welcome to the power-list mailing list! > > Please save this message for future reference. Thank you. > > If you ever want to remove yourself from this mailing list, > you can send mail to <Majordomo@lists.transport.com> with the following > command in the body of your email message: > > unsubscribe power-list > > or from another account, besides jba@research.att.com: > > unsubscribe power-list jba@research.att.com > > If you ever need to get in contact with the owner of the list, > (if you have trouble unsubscribing, or have questions about the > list itself) send email to <owner-power-list@lists.transport.com> . > This is the general rule for most mailing lists when you need > to contact a human. > > Here's the general information for the list you've subscribed to, > in case you don't already have it: > > Welcome to the Windows Power Management Discussion Chat List. So I found out that MS and all the manufactures were trying to work out the bugs in this new standard. The manufactures did not sound like a happy bunch, in my opinion. Here is a typical message: > -----Original Message----- > From: david_christensen@phoenix.com > [mailto:david_christensen@phoenix.com] > Sent: Wednesday, August 19, 1998 5:38 PM > To: power-list@lists.transport.com > Subject: How EXACTLY does Win98 recognize an ACPI > BIOS? > > I am having some problems getting Win98 to recognize an ACPI > BIOS. I have run the Control Panel/Add New Hardware wizard (but > the wizard never detects ANY new hardware). My question is, what will be the impact of this once it is worked out. Is this going to put us at a disadvantage, with a new bios that does not work with linux? There have already been problems with this new win98 ACPI bios for the IBM560 series. APM is very important for laptop function. MS has played a few tricks/games in the past. APM is an area where they could really do some serious damage if they chose to do so.
