I am forwarding your message to the apmd list so that other people can
discuss too.  Your suggestions are good.

To change virtual consoles, it seems that "chvt" is a good choice.
Unfortunately I don't think there is an easy way to remember how to
switch back to the X console upon resume.

To the apmd list--

I still recommend that we not enable these kinds of commands by
default, but we should definitely document them.
