I've had no trouble on my laptop.  Installed RedHat 6.0 and put
a new kernel on it right away (2.2.9); 2.2.10 works OK too.  This
is on a Toshiba Portege 3020; YMMV.

It needed too much tweaking, sound and power management etc,
but kernel trouble was never an issue.
