Okay, I just killed apmd and hit the suspend button, the notebook ended up in hibernate again, so perhaps it's not got to do with apmd. I'm not sure if I should have started the system without apmd running at all... but I could try that. It is tedious to test because it doesn't happen all the time. As far as I can tell, this typically happens at the end of my work day, when the notebook has been running for many hours, and I had a Xircom CE3 network card inserted (I eject it before suspending). It doesn't happen when I purposely try to reproduce the problem (in such instances, the notebook would only have been running several minutes). It also doesn't happen at home where I would have a modem card in use rather than network card, even though I sometimes leave the notebook running overnight.
