The apmd package is a set of user-level programs to control the Advanced
Power Management system found in all modern laptop computers and most modern
desktops. apmd talks to the Linux kernel APM layer, which does all the hardware-dependent stuff; see Stephen Rothwell's page at Linuxcare Australia for information about the kernel layer. I'm taking over the apmd package from its original author, Rik Faith. Here is a PGP-signed e-mail from Rik, giving me his blessing. The current version of apmd is version 3.0.2. It contains many changes since version 2.4, which was released back in 1996, and these have been tested long enough that I think it's stable. You can get the source code here; Debian GNU/Linux includes a precompiled version in its unstable distribution. If you run a 2.2.x kernel and want to experiment, Gabor Kuti (seasons@falcon.sch.bme.hu) has made a kernel patch that allows you to "hibernate" any Linux system to disk, even if your computer's APM BIOS doesn't support it directly.
